Project Location and Date:

Fremantle Ports, Western Australia | 2023 – 2024

Client:

Fremantle Port Authority and Cova Haywards (joint venture)

The Project Brief:

Harley Dykstra's Perth-Peel office was engaged in a key project with Fremantle Port Authority and Cova Haywards at the Kwinana Bulk Terminal from 2023 to 2024.

This major development focuses on the Clinker Import Project, which includes the construction of 500 metres of conveyor systems and a cutting-edge storage dome - only the second of its kind in Australia. This project has been critical to enhancing clinker imports at the port, and our involvement has spanned both site works and Structural Mechanical and Pipework (SMP).

The Clinker Import Project represents a significant development milestone for Fremantle Ports. From its inception in February 2023, the project has involved complex engineering and structural work, making it a remarkable achievement for all partners involved.

Harley Dykstra's Involvement:

From February 2023 to April 2024, Harley Dykstra played an integral role in the project, providing specialised surveying and site management services across the Kwinana Bulk Terminal.

Our key responsibilities included:

Survey Control Upgrade:

We conducted a site-wide survey control upgrade across the Kwinana Bulk Terminal, ensuring the project's foundational data was accurate and up to date.

Preliminary Surveys:

Utilising a combination of LiDAR UAV technology for broad area capture and Terrestrial Laser Scanner/Total Station for high-precision conveyor surveys, our team conducted initial surveys to map out the project zone. This enabled a detailed and accurate site overview before the construction began.

Structural Mechanical and Pipework (SMP) Works:

Our team was engaged for crucial structural works, including the CC01 Lower modules, CC01 Trestles, CC03 (conveyor system within a tunnel), and CC04 Trestles. This involved surveying and ensuring structural conformance of each element.

Verticality Surveys:

For the 50m-tall T14 tower, we performed verticality surveys to ensure precise alignment, essential for structural integrity, and construction conformance.

Clinker Dome Inflation and Conformance Checks:

After the inflation of the Clinker Dome, Harley Dykstra conducted as-constructed surveys using Terrestrial Laser Scanners to ensure the structure met all engineering specifications. We also marked blockouts and baseplates for casting, 40 metres above ground level, during the dome's reinforcement process.

Fremantle Port Clinker Project to Date:

The Clinker Import Project at Fremantle Ports has made remarkable progress. The collaboration between Fremantle Port Authority, Cova Haywards, and Harley Dykstra has resulted in significant milestones, including the completion of the conveyor system and the inflation of the Clinker Dome. Our team's high-precision surveys and structural management work have been pivotal in the project's advancement, ensuring accuracy and safety at every stage.

The Clinker Import Project stands as a testament to the effective teamwork and engineering excellence brought together by all involved. The Kwinana Bulk Terminal is now better positioned to handle clinker imports, further supporting Western Australia’s growing construction needs.
