On Board With A New Faro Focus 3D Laser Scanner

Harley Dykstra have recently expanded their fleet of survey instrumentation with the purchase of a FARO Focus 3D 130X Terrestrial Laser Scanner. This piece of equipment allows our staff to scan up to a million points a second, fully co-ordinated and colour rendered in order to produce laser point cloud scans. These can then be modelled and features extracted to produce full 3D models of buildings, transport infrastructure, industrial plant infrastructure, heritage buildings or any other structure. In a nutshell, if it can be seen it can be measured.

The 130 meter range of the scanner opens up numerous possibilities for measuring structures and assets from a safe distance. In many instances laser scanning is the only technique which will allow for the safe measurement of structures/features that may be prone to slippage, falling or high volume traffic flow (and are therefore too dangerous to access). Harley Dykstra have completed projects in the past involving scanning high traffic volume traffic bridges without the need for closure of any of the road infrastructure by using laser scanning technology from the verge of the road and bridge. Using this techniques we are able to safely model complicated assets to a high degree of accuracy to allow for deformation monitoring, asset documentation and asset replacement planning.

Laser scanning work methodology allows an entire site to be “oversampled” so that even features not required in the original project’s scope are captured by the scan and can be referred back to later in the office, avoiding the need for multiple site visits to obtain features not originally scoped for

Another popular application for laser scanning technology is modelling of heritage buildings, in particular building facades. The scanning range of our new instrument allows us to safely scan buildings from ground level up to a number of stories high. In addition to this, scan shadowing can be avoided by occupying a high scan location from neighbouring buildings in order to capture the full extent of “out-of-reach” portions of the building. Terrestrial laser scanning has many applications and we would welcome your enquires to see how we can assist you with providing a laser scan data for your projects.
